Town Hall (Porto)
The Town Hall of Porto
The City Hall of Porto is located at the extreme end of Avenida dos Aliados.
The construction work began in 1920 according to plans by the architect António Correia da Silva. After a few interruptions, the building was finally completed in 1955. It consists of six floors, a basement and two courtyards. Exactly in the middle of the town hall stands a 70 m high tower in the height. There is a glockenspiel, which can be reached via an inner staircase consisting of 180 steps.
The facade is made of granite from the quarries of São Gens and Fafe. It is decorated with a dozen sculptures designed by José Sousa Caldas and Henrique Moreira, each showing typical Porto activities, e.g. winegrowing, industry and navigation. In front of the building stands a statue depicting the poet Almeida Garrett (1799-1854). It was made in 1954 by the sculptor Barata Feio.
