Theologia tripartita (Latin: theology of theology) is a predecessor of the Platonic (Aristotle) and Aristotle (Metaphysics XII, 8, 1074a38-b14), developed by the Stoic Panaitius Distinguishing between mythical, philosophical and state religion. With this theory one tried to cover the spectrum of religion in the ancient world of life according to the areas of mythology, critical philosophy, and public cult serving the common good. Marcus Terentius Varro, in his writings on the ancient Roman religion, formulated a schema of theologia tripartita, which distinguishes three types of theology (genera theologiae): the mythical poets (theologia mythica), the physical philosophers (theologia naturalis) and the state (theologia civilis). This theory found violent criticism in Augustine (especially in De civitate dei VI, 5-10. 12). In the early modern period, Giambattista Vico (Scienza nuova, n. 366) attempted a revitalization of the idea, by combining mythical and political theology and prescribing to it the philosophical and the Christian (ie the revealed) theology.
