Vaitonis graduated from the Faculty of Building Management at the Institute of Civil Engineers in Kharkiv (Ukraine) in 1965 after completing his high school diploma at the middle school. After that, he worked as the head of the planning department in the building rest in Klaipėda and later as a teacher in the school. Since 1976 he has played chess. He was twice Lithuanian individual master in the Fernschach. Since 2014 he has been awarded the title of International Telecaster.
