Ulrich von Brünn (also Udalrich of Brno, Czech Oldřich Brněnský or Udalrich z Brna) († 27th March 1113) was a Moravian prince.
The son of Konrad I and Virpirka of Tengling from the Přemyslid family ruled from 1092 to 1113 in the principality of Brno, and ruled in the principality of Znojmo from 1112 to 1113.
Břetislav II, who after Konrad's death took over the succession in the principality of Bohemia, tried to regulate his own succession against the principle of the seniorate in favor of his brother Bořivoj II. Ulrich, the heir to the throne, wanted to enforce his rights. In 1097 he was captured and imprisoned in Glatz. Břetislav, however, secured Henry's succession in the throne in favor of his brother. Ulrich was then allowed to settle down again at his castle in Brno. In 1100, Břetislav II died after an assassination attempt and Bořivoj II, who had been appointed administrator of Moravia after the capture of Ulrich, moved to Prague to take over the Bohemian Republic. Ulrich and his brother Litold of Znojim were commissioned with the administration of Moravia.
In the case of Henry IV, Ulrich continued to demand his rights to the throne of Bohemia, whereupon he was granted an estate over Bohemia. After unsuccessful negotiations with Bořivoj, Ulrich moved with the support of Austrian and Bavarian armies towards Prague. After the first battle of Malín, however, the less motivated mercenaries dispersed. Ulrich then retired to Brno and renounced the throne. After the death of Litold, he received the Principality of Znojmo.
Ulrich was presumably buried in Trebitsch, like his brother Litolt, in the Benedictine monastery founded by them in 1109. Family Relationships Edit the source text Weblinks Edit sourcetext
