Woman with a water jug
Woman with a water jug, is a painting done around the year 1662 by Johannes Vermeer. It is an oil on canvas of 45.7cm x 40.6cm, and is exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Typical work of Vermeer's maturity. The usual colors in the artist predominate: lemon yellow, blue, and magenta. The painting presents a series of characteristic objects in the painting of the Dutch: the chair, the map hanging from the wall, the foreground table. The tonalities obtained in certain parts of the painting, such as in the headdress, worked almost as if it were a watercolor, make this work a magnificent example of the wisdom of the Dutch genius. Admirable is also the effect of reflection obtained in the jug that the maid holds.
