Oceania championships in badminton have been taking place since 1997, despite a long Badmintontradition in Australia and New Zealand. Since 1999, a team competition has been held in addition to the five individual disciplines. The title bouts take place every two years, only between 1999 and 2002, the period between the championships extended by one year to three years. The Robson Shield is played in the team competition, which goes back to the New Zealand badminton players Heather and Jeffrey Robson.
