Pylorus
For an ancient Greek city, see Piloro (city).
The pylorus is the lower valve that connects the stomach to the duodenum. Physiology
The pylorus is a small portion of the stomach that serves as the gateway to the duodenum (the small intestine principle), closing or opening to prevent or stop food.
This function allows food to be digested by the stomach by preventing the food from passing prematurely into the intestine due to gravity. When the gastric digestion process is over, the pylorus opens, letting go of the chyme (dense fluid, formed by the bolus of food and the gastric juices to the intestine, where a different type of digestion takes place).
