This breed goes back to old breeds such as Frutigschaf, which was mentioned in the 14th century. It is the result of various local landmarks such as the Elbe (yellow-brown) mountain sheep and the Roux de Bagnes. Racial homogenization did not take place until the beginning of the 20th century. Through consistent selection, an early and very fertile scent was developed. The breed was unified in 1941 under the term "black-brown mountain sheep" and has been recognized in Switzerland since 1979 as a herd beech breed. Dissemination Edit sourcetext
The Schwarzbraune Bergschaf can be found in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. In Austria, Juraschaf is said to avoid confusion with other breeds. A 100-headed sheep herd migrated from French-speaking Switzerland to Carinthia in 1977 with the cooperative Longo maï, and then spread to the other bordering countries.
