lamp oil

Lamp oil is oil used for combustion in oil lamps. In the narrower sense, the term is today synonymous with petroleum.

Historically, prior to the refining of petroleum, vegetable oils such as sesame oil, olive oil, rapeseed oil or linseed oil were used. In the 19th century, Tran had a great importance for street lighting in major cities like London or Paris ("Tranfunzeln").

In China, after the Song Dynasty (from the end of the 13th century), cotton seed oil was used, which fell as a cheap by-product in the cultivation of cotton. Other oils formerly used in China for lighting - in addition to those already mentioned - were obtained from trees: from the sebum tree, wood tree (tung tree), camphor tree and Camellia oleifera (camellia oil). Depending on the region, they also included lamp oil from beet, fish oil, castor oil, soybean oil, hemp oil, walnut oil and Chinese pistachios (pistacia sinensis). Single-level Edit source text
