English-Japanese Friendship Treaty
The English-Japanese Friendship Treaty (Jap. 日 英 和 親 条約, Nichi-Ei Washin Joyaku) was concluded on October 4, 1854, as the first limited friendship treaty between Great Britain and Japan. He was signed in Nagasaki by the Australian governor admiral Sir James Stirling and the governors of Nagasaki (Nagasaki bugyō) as the representative of the Tokugawa Shogunate (Bakufu).
The agreement came about as a result of the opening of Japan, enforced by US Commodore Matthew Perry and contracted with the Kanagawa Convention. Russia also entered into a similar agreement with the Treaty of Shimoda. Edit source text Edit source text
