Mario Conejo

Mario Hernán Conejo Maldonado (Peguche, Otavalo, June 25, 1959) is an indigenous leader, sociologist and Ecuadorian politician of Kichwa nationality. He was mayor of the municipality of Otavalo.

Mario Conejo, then a member and one of the founders of the Pachakutik movement, was elected in 2000 as the first indigenous mayor of Otavalo and one of the first in Ecuadorian history. He was re-elected in 2005 and 2009. In 2006 he left Pachakutik.

Mario Conejo Maldonado is brother of the poet Ariruma Kowii and also of Roberto Conejo Maldonado, Director of the Magap zone 1 Imbabura.
