Ward (administrative unit)
As an [wɔ: rd], an electoral district within a municipality has been designated in Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The English word is of Germanic origin, derived from Old-English weard for 'guard', and was influenced in the Middle English by Old French warde for 'Guardians'. Wards are usually named after districts, streets, parishes, landmarks, areas, and in some cases, historical persons from this region. In the United States, wards are often numbered only.
