Robert Ballard (Composer)

Robert Ballard (* around 1575 in Paris (?); † after 1650, possibly 1673) was a French lutenist and composer. Edit LifeQualtext

He was the son of the same-named publisher Robert Ballard, his brother Pierre was the "imprimeur de musique du roi" at the French court. Robert Ballard's lute teacher was the composer of his father, the publisher, composer and lutenist Adrian Le Roy.

Robert Ballard was a well-known soloist and teacher after 1610, and the young King Louis XIII belonged to his pupils. He was always present at the court until the 1640s, for a time he performed the title of "musicien ordinaire du roi" or "musicien du Roy". However, his life after 1650 - the year of his wife's death - is nothing more.

In his time, Ballard was considered one of the leading lutenists in France, and his position at the court underpins this. His compositions - all for lute solo - can be found in two books from the years 1611 and 1614, and some works have also been published in various collections.
