.local

.local is a top-level pseudo-domain used by mDNS network protocol that discovers the clients in it.

This is also known in the Microsoft Windows world as the Active Directory or Active Directory that manages the DNS of an internal corporate network.

If a computer works with Mac OS X this is not assigned by the DNS server, this will identify itself as hostname.local The name of the client running Mac OS can be displayed and changed in Sharing from the Panel Control in Mac OS.

The name resolution problem can arise if Bonjour and / or Multicast-DNS is used in conjunction with the DNS of a network that has a .local domain, so .localhost, .lan, or .test can be used as an alternative to .local
