Daniel Steibelt

Daniel Steibelt.

Daniel Gottlieb Steibelt (Berlin, 22 October 1765 - St. Petersburg, October 2, 1823) was a German pianist and composer. Life and work

Daniel Steibelt studied music with Johann Kirnberger before being forced by his father to serve in the Prussian army. Once he had deserted the army, he began a somewhat nomadic career as a pianist before settling in Paris in 1790. In that city his dramatic opera, Romeo and Juliet, was successfully reproduced at the Feydeau Theater in 1793. < / p>

Steibelt began to alternate between Paris and London, where his masterful use of the piano attracted the attention of many. In 1797 participated in a concert of J. P. Salamon. In 1798 he composed his concert number 3 in E flat, which contained a stormy rondo characterized by intense tremolos, which were very popular. In the following year, Steibelt began his professional tour in Germany and, after playing with some success in Hamburg, Dresden, Prague and Berlin, he arrived in Vienna in May 1800, where he challenged Beethoven to compete in a meeting at the Count von Fries.

In addition to his dramatic music, Steibelt left us an enormous amount of compositions, mostly for piano.
