The branch of the tree is named after the tree-shaped beams which are covered with branches. The cruciform is usually that of a Latin cross, but there are also those with fork crosses, which are executed as a branch cross. This crucifix was most frequently used in the Gothic style, for example in the Minorite Church in Vienna (1275) and the Hildesheimer Dom (1015). The branch cross represents the association with the "tree of life" (paradise) H. with eternal life itself. In the 19th century, the branch of the Cross was often run around with wine or ivy leaves.

In heraldry, it can be used as a common figure or as a herald image. The oblique branch of the cross becomes the branch. This particular form is then called Burgundy Cross. Weblinks Edit sourcetext
