A meat thermometer or kitchen thermometer is a thermometer to measure the internal temperature of meat, especially roasts and steaks, and other foods. The degree of "cooking" of the meat or bread correlates closely with the internal temperature, so that a reading of the thermometer indicates when it has been cooked as desired. When cooking, food must always be cooked so that the inside reaches a sufficient temperature, which in the case of meat is sufficient to kill the pathogens that can cause foodborne diseases or, in the case of bread, that is has been cooked, the thermometer helps to ensure this.
