Juan Crisóstomo Gómez
Juan Crisóstomo Gómez (Táchira, Venezuela, 1860 - Caracas, Venezuela, June 30, 1923) was a Venezuelan politician.
He was the son of Pedro Cornelio Gómez and of Hermenegilda Chacón Alarcón; brother of President Juan Vicente Gómez. He was born in La Mulera hacienda, near San Antonio del Táchira, where he remained his childhood and much of his youth. In the early 1900's he moved to Caracas and since then became the person who most trusted his brother Juan Vicente. One of his first political participations is in 1908 like president of the state Miranda. The people who knew him called Don Juancho or Juanchito, despite having the title of general. In 1915 he was elected Governor of Caracas.
In 1922, he asked the congress to carry out a constitutional reform with the intention of restoring the first and second vice presidencies of the Republic. This petition was approved and for the period from 1922 to 1929 Juan Vicente Goméz is named as president and Juan Crisóstomo Gómez as first vice president. On June 30, 1923, Chrysostom is stabbed to death in his room at the Miraflores Palace. Following the assassination, Francisco Pimentel and Leoncio Martínez were arrested; however, after numerous investigations into the case brought by Judge Horacio Chacón and Governor Acelio Hidalgo, Captain Isidro Barrientos was identified as the material perpetrator of the crime.
