Josep Escrig


Josep Escrig i Font (Segorbe, 1825 - Madrid, 1921) was a lawyer and politician of the Valencian Community, Spain. Biography

He graduated in law and was part of the Moderate Party during the reign of Isabella II, with whom he was elected lieutenant mayor of Segorbe in 1852 and provincial deputy in 1852-1854. In 1854 he was elected mayor of Segorbe, but was deposed during the revolution of 1854 and after the Progressive Biennium regained the position, which he held until 1858. He was elected deputy to Cortes by Segorbe in 1858, and provincial deputy again in 1858-1860.

In 1863, 1864 and 1867 was again deputy to Spanish Cortes, by Segorbe and Liria, councilor of Segorbe and interim mayor, position that left in October of 1864 when it was appointed mayor-corregidor of Valencia. He was appointed civil governor of the province of Castellón from March to May 1865 and from July 1866 to September 1868 during the government of the Liberal Union of Leopoldo O'Donnell. He was deposed with the outbreak of the revolution of 1868. After the Bourbon Restoration was linked to the liberal circles and was chosen deputy by the electoral district of Segorbe in the general elections of 1876 and 1881. In January of 1883 resigned its seat when it was appointed civil governor of the province of Valencia. During the 1890s he was one of the main leaders of the Castilian liberal caciquismo directed by Juan Navarro Reverter.
