Deceangli
Tribes of Wales during the Roman invasion. The exact position of the borders is a matter of debate.
The deceanglos or deceangos were one of the Celtic tribes that inhabited in Britania before the Roman conquest of the island. The deceanglos lived in the north of Wales, although it is not known if their possessions extended only along the regions of Flintshire and Denbighshire, in the north of Wales, or if they extended more towards the west.
The first Roman attack on the Welsh tribes occurred in the year 48, when Publius Ostorio Scapula, the governor of the province, marched on the deceanglos. The historiographical and archaeological evidences found in the zone show that the deceanglos surrendered without showing hardly resistance, all the opposite that their neighbors, the catfishes and the ordovicos. It does not appear that the Romans built any colony in the territories of this tribe, although the fortress of Canovium (Caerhun) was erected in the area adjacent to the lands of the deceanglos and could have contained a civil population of considerable size.
The name "deceanglos" was preserved in the Welsh language under the name of "Tegeingl" and served to designate the region that covered much of Flintshire.
