Robert Simpson

Robert (Wilfred Levick) Simpson (March 2, 1921 - November 21, 1997) was an English songwriter and producer for a long time on the BBC.

He is known for his production in orchestral and chamber music (including 11 symphonies and 15 string quartets) and his writings on music by Beethoven, Bruckner, Nielsen and Sibelius. He studied composition with Herbert Howells. Notable for a composer who was still alive, the Robert Simpson Society was created in 1980 by individuals who considered Simpson's music unfairly cracked. The Society works to bring its music closer to a larger audience by sponsoring recordings and performances, publishes a magazine and other publications and maintains a file with its works.
