Robert Merkel

Merkel attended the Volksschule and received private lessons in Mylau, after which he attended the Realschule in Plauen and the Handelsschule in Glauchau. He first learned to be a weaver and then as a merchant in Mylau. From 1866 to 1869 he was in a position as merchant in Glauchau. He served as a one-year volunteer from October 1, 1869, and was recruited as a private figure in 1870. During the campaign, he became the lieutenant of the reserve and on 30 November 1870 he was severely wounded in the Battle of Villiers. He was adopted by the regimental uniform. After the war, he entered the paternal weavers' weaving mill and worsted spinning mill in Mylau, which he later took over with his brother. Merkel was a member of the municipal council of Mylauer since 1883 and city council since 1886. He was also a member of the Bezirksstag, chairman of the manufacturer association Reichenbach-Mylau-Netzschkau and board member of the Association of Saxon-Thuringian Weavers in Leipzig.
He was awarded with the 1870/71 campaign medal, the commemorative medal to Emperor Wilhelm I, the Saxon Albrechtsorden and the Knight Cross I. Class.
From 1907 to 1912 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of Sachsen 22 (Auerbach, Reichenbach) and the Nationalliberal Party.
