Helmut Knebel


Helmut Knebel (* September 24, 1947 in Salzgitter) is an SPD politician and was mayor of the city of Salzgitter from 2001 to 2006.

Knebel studied mathematics, works and cathedral at the Paedagogische Hochschule Braunschweig from 1967 to 1970. Religion and was subsequently teacher at different Salzgitteranschulen, since 1994 also headmaster of a real school. In 1998, he was elected as a deputy to the Lower Saxony Landtag. He has been a member of the SPD since 1969.

In 2001, Knebel was elected as a candidate for the mayor's office in municipal elections. For the first time, the traditional double point at the head of the administration (Oberbürgermeister and Oberstadtdirektor) was abandoned. As the mayor, Knebel succeeded the CDU politician Rudolf Rückert.

In the election of the mayor of the country on September 10, 2006, however, Knebel missed the required absolute majority of the votes to be re-elected in the first round. This made it necessary to make a selection against the candidate of the CDU Frank Klingebiel. This was carried out on September 24th. Knebel suffered 48.3% of the votes. On October 31, 2006, Knebel left the office of Lord Mayor. Knebel is not a member of the town council because he did not accept his mandate after the election. Knebel also stayed away from the election and swearing-in of his successor in the post of mayor at the constituent meeting of the Council on 1 November 2006.
