Gysbrecht Leytens

Gysbrecht Leytens, wooded river landscape with resting shepherds, oil on wood, 40 × 57.8 cm

Gijsbrecht Leytens (* 1586 in Antwerp, † 1643 or 1656 in Antwerp) is a Flemish painter who painted almost exclusively winter landscapes. He became an apprentice at the Antwerp workshop of Jacques Vrolyck at the age of twelve, then became a member of the local Lukasgilde in 1611 and from 1617 he had his own workshop with his own assistants.

Leytens themes are small figures surrounded by large trees in the winter forest, a theme that is sometimes characterized in the art by the Dutch word Winterken (Little Winter). Single-level Edit source text Standard data (person): VIAF: 95867644 | Wikipedia People Search
