The Nípsfjörður is a bay in the north-east of Iceland in the fjord Vopnafjörður.
This bay is located west of Vopnafjörður and Kolbeinstangi. The bay is 3 kilometers wide and reaches about 1600 meters far into the country. The inner coast forms the Nípssandur, which separates the Nípslón behind it almost entirely from the open sea. This lagoon stretches almost 6 kilometers further into the country, almost as far as the Vopnafjörður. This lagoon is crossed by Norðausturvegur, road 85. The river flows into the lagoon. In older maps, the bay is still written Nýpsfjörður, but this does not change the pronunciation. Edit source text
