First flood of Saint Marcelo (1219)


The First Flood of San Marcelo took place on Wednesday, January 16, 1219, on the feast day of Saint Marcelo I. This storm was particularly disastrous because after the storm a storm surge that broke several dikes. That way flooded much of the north of the Netherlands and the region of Zuiderzee. About 36 000 people were drowned, mainly in western Friesland and Groningen (current provinces in the north of the Netherlands).

In just 50 years four major floods - the Flood of Saints (1170), the Flood of St. Nicholas (1196) and the flood of 1214 and this First Flood of San Marcelo (1219) - led to two large floods inland seas in the Netherlands: the Zuiderzee and the Frisian Sea. Notes
