Cape Fear Railways

The Cape Fear Railways (AAR-reporting mark: CF) is an American marshalling railway company located in Fort Bragg (North Carolina). The company is based in Fort Bragg and is part of the Seaboard Corporation.

In 1906, the Fayetteville Street Railway and Power Company built an overland tram from Fayetteville (North Carolina) to Fort Bragg. In 1921 the Cape Fear Railways took over the railway line. This was the order for the transport of the aircraft fuel for the Pope Air Force Base. Since the route was not designed for the freight traffic, the Cape Fear Railways built a railway line from Skibo (on the Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad line) to Fayetteville. In 1926 the Cape Fear Railways was converted into a public railway and the new line was put into operation. At the same time, the former tram line was closed down. In 1930 the company took over the operation of the rail network within Fort Bragg. In 1984 the transport was stopped on the route to Skibo. Due to the proximity to a heavily used road and the construction, the fuel transport was discontinued in 1984 over the distance to Skibo. In 2007 the decommissioning of this section was requested. The military base has been supplied exclusively from the CSX route in Fort Junction since 1984.

The approximately eight kilometer stretch network within Fort Bragg is leased from the US Army and the connecting line from the CSX. The company has seven employees and two EMD GP10 rented by the US Army. Edit source text Weblink Edit source text Single-level Edit source text
