Shamash-shum-ukin

Shamash-shum-ukin was a king of the X dynasty of Babylon that reigned in the period 668 a. C.-648 a. C.

He received the power of his brother Ashurbanipal of Assyria, who renounced the double crown of Assyria and Babylon, thus respecting the will of their father, Asarhadon. In fact, the kingdom of Babylon was now reduced to the cities of Babylon, Borsippa, Kutha and Sippar, and its surroundings, so that Shamash-shum-ukin was jealous of his brother, who, being younger than him, part of the empire.

In the year 652 a. C. rebelled, receiving the support of the traditional enemies of Assyria, that is to say, Elam, Egypt, the Country of the Sea, and the princes Arabs and Syrians. Assyria, as usual, reacted slowly but relentlessly, as the war machine it was, overcoming all the insurgents. The Babylonian king was defeated and killed, being replaced by Kandalanu, who despite having the title of king, was nothing more than an Assyrian governor. Bibliography
