The institute was founded in 1975. His founders include Enrico Cerulli, President of the Italian Academy of Sciences Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Elena Croce, the daughter of the famous philosopher Benedetto Croce, the lawyer Gerardo Marotta, who contributed substantially to the financing of the institute and the two university professors Pietro Piovani and Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli (Ancient History). The hotel is located in the historic Palazzo Serra di Cassano, in the Monte di Dio district, not far from the famous Teatro San Carlo and Via Chiaia. In addition, the institute has earned a large number of publications such as works, studies and lectures, including the critical edition of Giordano Bruno and other famous philosophers.
The institute also publishes its own international and multilingual journal Nouvelles de la République des Lettres, founded in 1981 by Paul Dibon and Tullio Gregory with the participation of numerous international scholars (Marc Fumaroli, Paul Oskar Kristeller, Paul Raabe and others) in two folders per year.
