The Battle of Yamen, which took place on 19 March 1279 at Yamen (chinese 崖门 / 崖門, Klippentor) in today's Xinhui district (新 会 / 新 會) on the left bank of the Pearl River Delta , Pinyin Xī Jiāng, West River) was one of the largest sea battles in world history. Despite a numerical superiority of the Song Dynasty's forces under its admiral Zhang Shijie, the Kublai Khan's fleet prevailed, ending the rule of the Song Dynasty. Edit Background and HistoryQtext
Large parts of South China (the capital of Hangzhou) had already been conquered by the Mongols under Kublai Khan since 1276. Thus, the leaders of the Song Dynasty attempted to turn the paper through a sea battle in the delta region of the Pearl River. The battle became a disaster in spite of the multiple numerical superiority of the Songstreitkräfte, which cost more than 100,000 lives. The Prime Minister and Imperial Advisor Lu Xiufu (陆秀夫, 1232-1279) recognized the hopelessness of the situation, took the childish Song Bing and jumped with him at Yaishan in the river to take himself and his ruler's life before the Mongol army on Mount Ya near the river, which is why the battle is also called "sea battle on Mount Ya". The act was to be regarded as a sign of resistance and stubbornness towards the stranger. This ended the Song Dynasty after 314 years and the rule of the Yuan Dynasty began.
