Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero
Anastasio Jesus Somoza Portocarrero (18 December 1951, New York) is the eldest son of former Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle and Hope Portocarrero. Grandfather of the founders of the dynasty, General Anastasio Somoza García and Salvadora Debayle de Somoza. Biography
Popularly it is called "El Chigüín". He is the first-born of a family of five children. American citizen as his mother. He was born and lived as a child in New York and Nicaragua until he was 12 years old, where he attended the La Salle Pedagogical College and completed his secondary studies at a boarding school in Newton, Massachusetts. He studied at Harvard and received military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. During his father's term in the late 1970s, he was in charge of the National Guard (GN) Infantry Basic Training School (EEBI).
He married Marisa Celasco Oberholzer, daughter of a couple belonging to the Salvadoran elite. Somoza has two sons and one daughter.
In 2000 he announced his intentions to return to Nicaragua. Anastasio Somoza Portocarrero is still living in exile and has not insisted on his visit to Nicaragua.
At the beginning of 2008 he made statements to the Nicaraguan daily La Prensa, which created controversy and awakened old passions, many repudiating and others supporting it. A newspaper reporter traveled to Guatemala to get an interview with Somoza, which was published in the journal in a series. It was his first public statements practically since the triumph of the Revolution.
None of the Somoza Portocarrero brothers reside in Nicaragua, unlike other returning family members.
