Hans Hübner was the son of the painter Julius Hübner (1806-1882).
He studied at the University of Göttingen, where he promoted with Anton Geuther in 1859 with a paper "On Acrolein". He habilitated in 1863 and continued to work as a lecturer in Göttingen, then as an associate professor in 1870, and from 1874 until his death in 1884 as a full Professor and Director of the General Chemistry Laboratory (until 1882, alongside Friedrich Wöhler).
