As an erg (Arabian عرق, DMG'irq, Dunesmeer '), in Western Sahara and the Libyan desert also Edeyen, are large sandmeans in the Sahara, covering about 20 percent of the Sahara desert.
Some dunes are up to 300 m high and very well known. Through the fine sand Ergs often store water, and often wells are found on their edge.
Frequently, the general concept of desert is equated with erg, but only 20 per cent of all deserts are on earth. Erg generally refers to sandwastes. The largest part of the deserts is occupied by the Hammada (stone / rock desert) with about 70 percent. The remaining 10 percent consist of gravel (Serir) and mixed surfaces (Reg).
