Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán (Humanes de Madrid)

The church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in the town of Humanes de Madrid (Province of Madrid, Spain) was built in the 17th century using stone, brick and lime as materials. It had 3 naves, the highest and broadest central one and the entrance was in the south façade, like the present one. This facade had three heights. Until 1936 there had been many works to repair the damages that were occurring in the church, especially in the tower of the Belfry. During the Spanish Civil War, in August of 1936, a bomb that destroyed much of the temple fell on the church of Santo Domingo. Only the Toledan Mudejar style tower remained, such as those of Cubas, Griñon or Móstoles and the walls of the chapel. It was restored in 1953 the tower and in 1963 the chapel.

Within the church we can highlight some elements such as the chapel of the Holy Christ of the Column, the Virgin of the Guide or the Christ of the Agony. The Chapel of the Holy Christ of the Column or Miracle is from the eighteenth century, although there was another one previously. Both the old and the modern were decorated with frescoes, the first ones were made by Juan Bautista Vedo and Juan Antonio Casado at the end of the 17th century and its theme is unknown. Those in the new chapel were collecting biblical scenes. Lorenzana's Relations say: "In his poor temple is a chapel of good and beautiful architecture, devised by Ventura Rodriguez, who, after destroying an ancient one, built at his expense D.Manuel Martínez Escobar, servant of the King Our Lord, near the year 1758 ".

Inside the chapel is saved the size of the Christ of the Column. It is made of polychrome wood from the 17th century and it may be that the greatest achievement of the sculptor who made the carving (whose name is unknown) was to give him his impressive expression of pain on his face. Although there is no data that can approximate this legend to the historical truth, it is said that was made with the wood of a plum of Humanes and that the sculptor died before being able to finish the figure, putting the glass eyes to him.

The column that accompanies the Christ is not the original, which did not like the neighbors of Humanes or those of the neighboring towns that referred to the figure as the Christ of the cubeto, so it was changed to the current. / p>

The Virgin of Guide is the oldest image of those that are preserved. It is of the 16th century of polychrome wood. Hold the child with the right arm and hold with the other hand a pear, symbol of hope and fecundity.
