American National Biography


American National Biography is a 24-volume collection containing approximately 17,400 entries and 20 million words. It was published by Oxford University Press in 1999 as a successor to the Dictionary of American Biography published between 1926 and 1937. Its main editors are the historian and biographer John A. Garraty and Mark C. Carnes.

In the same year of its publication, in 1999, the American National Biography received the prestigious Dartmouth Medal Award from the American Library Association (ALA), one of the largest and oldest book associations in the world to be considered a work of of quality and exceptional meaning.
