Occupation of Villa Zografou

Villa Zografou (2013)

The Villa Zografou (Greek Βίλα Ζωγράφου) is a 19th-century, three-storey building in the Zografos district of Athens, organized as a self-organized social space after a house occupation.

This approximately 3.5 acre fenced property is one of the few open spaces in one of the densely populated areas of Europe. At the beginning of the 2000s, it was intended as a communal green space on which it was not to be built. The owners filed an appeal to build a shopping center on the property, whereupon the municipality of Zografos bought half of it in 2006 in order to increase the influence of the municipality on further use. The then mayor of Zografos, Giannis Kazakos, took a million-euro loan with the Austrian bank Kommunalkredit International, whose legality was later highly controversial. The fact that Prime Minister Giorgos Andrea Papandreou had to compensate for some of these debts in 2011 in order to receive further payments from the International Monetary Fund led to extensive reports in the Greek press. Activists demanded the disclosure and review of the state debt of Greece.

The villa was occupied by a meeting of residents Zografos in October 2011. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Single-level Edit source text
