Barras (Piauí)

Barras is a municipality in the state of Piauí, Brazil. It is found in the microregion of Alto Parnaíba Piauiense, in the middle region of southeast of Piaui. The city has about 5,999 inhabitants (2007 census) and 5,391 km².
Built in 1889, the town grew out of the Buritizinho farm. In the place there was a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceicao, who became its patron. The city was elevated to the rank of city and happened to be called Bars Marataoan, in allusion to the river that receives the visitors in its entrance and is between the bars of the rivers and streams. When it was elevated to category of city, the city happened to be called simply bars.
Located in the lower Parnaíba Piauiense micro, meso Piauiense Norte. The municipality has 44 850 inhabitants (2010) and 1776 km².
