Tokugawa Iesada (May 6, 1824 - August 14, 1858) was the 13th Tokugawa shōgun of Japan who was in power for only 5 years, from 1853 to 1858. He was mentally diminished and unable to be Shōgun. "Having risen to power after the episode of the Black Ships, which was supposedly the cause of the illness and death of his father Ieyoshi, Iesada was responsible for the unequal treaties signed at the Kanagawa Convention (Treaty of Anglo-Japanese friendship, Treaty of Friendship and Anglo-Japanese Trade) which broke the sakoku and opened the Japanese borders to foreign powers, opening the way to Bakumatsu.
