Hepatectomy (hepar) refers to the complete surgical removal of the liver during surgery. It is performed as part of a liver transplant.

The term partial hepatectomy often also appears in the literature, which means a partial removal of the liver (liver resection). This designation, however, is factually incorrect, since ectomy is by definition a complete removal of an organ. The correct designation for the operative partial removal of the liver is liver resection. Standard data (conceptual definition): GND: 4159546-4 (AKS)
