The Republic of Malta has a unicameral legislative body (Kamra tar-Rappreżentanti / House of Reprentaentatives) under the 1964 Constitution. The House of Representatives has between 65 and 69 members elected every 5 years under a proportional representation system. This chamber chooses the President of the Republic for a period of 5 years.
The judicial arm is independent. It consists of a Court of Appeal whose 16 members are elected by the President of the Republic under the advice of the Prime Minister. Your retirement age is 65 years. They have one Criminal, one Commercial and one Civil. Then the presiding judge meets with 9 other sworn judges to sentence the cases. There is a Constitutional Court that judges cases of unconstitutional laws, problems with elections, Human Rights. In Maltese political life there are two main parties: the Nationalist Party of Malta (PN) and the Labor Party of Malta (PLM). The margin of votes between the two parties is usually very short, so it was considered convenient to reform the Constitution of 1964 so that the party with more than 50% of the votes had more places in the House of Representatives and thus ensure the formation of government.
In his race to acquire a position in international politics, Malta belongs to the United Nations since 1964 and to the European Union since 2004.
