Old Town Hall Lüdenscheid
Old Town Hall Lüdenscheid
Until the completion of the New Town Hall in 1964, the Alte Rathaus Lüdenscheid was the central seat of the municipal administration of Lüdenscheid. In 1874, the building was completed with three full stories in the style of Italian Renaissance palaces. Round arched windows, an implied rustication on the ground floor, pilasters on the first and second floor, as well as a round arch frieze under the flat roof give it its special character. By removing the original articulated windows, the overall appearance today is slightly strict. The building is located in the center of Lüdenscheid's old town and in the immediate vicinity of the Church of the Redeemer. Previously, there was the so-called "Hochgrafenhaus" of the Hymmen family. From 1816 until his demolition in 1871/72, this already served as a town hall.
More than 1,000 people were arrested in the police headquarters of the Old Town Hall for political reasons, of which 356 were identified, including Erwin Welke, later mayor of the city of Lüdenscheid. Even decades before the construction of the new town hall, the space offered by the Old Town Hall for the city administration was no longer sufficient. Thus, it was last distributed over more than a dozen sites. In 1973 the cultural office of the city of Lüdenscheid and the Städtische Galerie moved into the Old Town Hall. Today, the monumental building is the headquarters of the municipal folk high school.
After the long-standing commitment of the Friedensgruppe Lüdenscheid, the initiative circle and later association Ge-Denk cells Altes Rathaus Lüdenscheid e.V., the Ge-Denk cells Altes Rathaus were opened on 23 November 2012 as part of a ceremonial ceremony. Since then, there is a memorial and memorial site for documenting the history of the Nazi regime in the anteroom and two arrest cells in the cellar of the building. The design of a third cell is now in planning and preparation. Single-level Edit source text Edit source text
