Franz Joseph was born as the fifth child of Duke Carl Theodor in Bavaria and his second wife Marie José of Portugal on 23 March 1888. He suffered from child paralysis and died in Munich on September 23, 1912.

Through his connection with Lilly Stockhammer (* 1891; † 1952), among other things, Princess of Prussia, he became the progenitor of the sex of Plottnitz-Stockhammer. He is the grandfather of the politician Rupert von Plottnitz.
