A monastery forest or monastery forest is a forest belonging to a monastery. In the Middle Ages, many monasteries possessed extensive forests, serving, for example, the supply of timber and meat to the monks. Often these forests were already owned by the monastery as a landlord's foundation, sometimes the forests were acquired later by purchase or donation.
In the course of the German east colonization and the medieval development of the country, a monastery was often the starting point of the settlement of previously uninhabited forest areas, so that it often also had large forests
