TERMCAT
TERMCAT is an organization created in Barcelona in 1985 by the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia and by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) in order to study terminology in Catalan. Since 1994 it is a consortium led by the two entities mentioned above and by the Consortium per la Linguistic Normalization.
The lines of action of TERMCAT are the development of terminological resources, the standardization of neologisms and terminological advice. Thus, in order to promote the systematization and dissemination of the terminology of the different sectors of activity, TERMCAT develops and promotes the development of multilingual dictionaries, vocabularies, lexicons and dissemination material of different fields of knowledge in various formats, establishes the denomination of the new terms and advises institutions, companies and individuals for the preparation, translation or edition of terminological and specialized works. TERMCAT collaborates with media, universities, professional associations and associations such as AENOR, TRIAC or SoftcatalĂ , and participates in national and international terminological activities. He is also part of the management team of the European Association of Terminology.
All the files made by TERMCAT are available to Cercaterm, an on-line consultation service that helps to resolve any terminological doubt arising in the writing or translation of specialized texts in Catalan. With regard to the detection of new terminology or in use in other languages and the new equivalence proposals for use in Catalan, the Supervisory Board of TERMCAT seeks to discern the most coherent way with the formation patterns of terminological neologisms of the Catalan language since a linguistic, terminological and usage perspective. All standardized neologisms can be consulted to Neoloteca.
TERMCAT has a staff of about 25 workers and is advised by external professionals in many fields. The body's budget is 1.5 million euros per year.
