Itu'äer
The Itu'aeans had been at the latest Salmanasser III. Part of the Assyrian army. The itu'aan associations underwent their own šaknu or LU.GAL itu'ājī. Postgate considers them to be full-time professional soldiers. They were assigned to the provincial statemen and served as a military police or were used in the subjugation of minor unrest. Under Tukulti-apil-Ešarra III. they were used against the Phoenicians. They are documented until the time of Assurhaddon. Partially, these soldiers were rewarded with land assignments and partly exempt from taxes. The Itu'aeans had been active since Tukulti-apil-Ešarra III. the most important Aramaic unit in the Assyrian army. On contemporary reliefs they are portrayed as archeries in Aramaic costume.
