Catch Wrestling

Catch Wrestling, or Catch-As-Catch-Can, is a classic combat sport from the Grappling area. It is regarded as the historical forerunner of popular wrestling, as organized today by WWE, for example. The roots of the Catch Wrestling lie in the English Lancashire, where up to the middle of the 19th century a particularly aggressive wrestling style with a focus on ground combat and tasks was developed. British immigrants brought the "Lancashire Wrestling" and other local wrestling traditions to the USA, where the Catch Wrestlers at the beginning of the twentieth century, mainly as a fairground attractions. The battles, however, were authentic and were not discussed in their course and outcome. Catch Wrestling got hugely popular in the United States thanks to stars like Frank Gotch, but in the course of time he moved away from his sporting roots. By focusing on the show character of the battles, the modern wrestling was created with previously determined combat sequences and exits. In German, because of this historical kinship is still partly spoken of "Catchen", if the show-wrestling is meant. Current situation Edit source text

As a result of the spread of mixed martial arts competitions and the ensuing popular popularity for grappling disciplines since the end of the 20th century, the traditional Catch Wrestling also experienced a certain renaissance. Known MMA fighters such as Josh Barnett and Randy Couture, and especially Kazushi Sakuraba, successfully applied techniques from the Catch Wrestling arsenal. Weblinks Edit sourcetext
