Tropus (Gregorian)
In connection with the Gregorian chorale, the tropus is an addition and an extension to the established liturgical chants of Gregorian music. This supplements the textual as well as the melodic, without changing it in its own way. Tropics can occur as pure melodic additions (melismas), as text poetry on existing melismas, or as additional texts with their own melodies, which precede the underlying song, inserted or appended.
The first tropics were created in the Carolingian period. The Council of Trent eliminated the tropics in the liturgical chants, their text beginnings at the Kyrie are still recognizable today in the Latin names of several choral masses.
A special case of the tropus is the (classical) sequence. Edit source text Edit source text Single-level Edit source text Standard data (conceptual definition): GND: 4211530-9 (AKS)
