The German company Maizena GmbH, which was named after Maimena in 1918, was a company specializing in the production of starch-containing foods, such as maizena, Mondamin and Weizenin. It was founded in Hamburg in 1916 as a subsidiary of the US company Corn Products Refining Corporation (CPC), which had already opened a sales office in Hamburg in 1905 to sell its starch products in Germany. In 1916, Maizena was registered as a trademark. The company had factories in Hamburg, Barby (built in 1922/1923) and Krefeld in Germany. After the Second World War the West German Maizena shifted the production from Hamburg to Krefeld. Even in the GDR (that is, in the later exproved plant Barby) was first produced under the name of Maizena, after 1949 under Maisan.
The product Maizena is a starch obtained from corn, free from protein, fat and fibers, used to bind and soak soups, sauces and desserts or fondues. In contrast to other starches such as potato starch, it can be boiled longer without diluting again. Dextro Energen also belonged to the product range.
From 1922 Maizena took part in the food factory Knorr in Heilbronn, the majority of which was acquired in 1958. In 1987 the company was relocated to Heilbronn.
In 1998, CPC was renamed Bestfoods and Bestfoods was integrated into the British-Dutch group Unilever in autumn 2000. Weblinks Edit sourcetext Single-level Edit source text
