Robert Grant (Politiker)

Robert Grant (Politiker) Sir Robert Grant (born January 15, 1780 in Bengal, India) was a British politician and author of the O Worship the King. His father was the politician, missionary and social reformer Charles Grant.

At the age of six, the family moved from India to England. Robert Grant, like his brother Charles, became a fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and a lawyer. From 1818 to 1834, he represented various constituencies in Parliament, where he was primarily concerned with the equality of the Jews.

In June 1834, he was appointed governor of Bombay, where he made a name for himself mainly through his social commitment and the construction of some streets between the city and the hinterland. He died in India on July 9, 1838, at the age of 59.

Grant wrote a study on the history of the East India Company, whose chairman had been his father, and is today known mainly for his hymns, whose most famous is O Worship the King.

Grant was popular in India. Because of his social commitment, the second-most medical faculty of India, Grant Medical College, was named after him.
