Johann Hinrich Schweffel II was a son of Johann Schweffel I and his wife Anna Margarethe Schultz, born Hegen. He had two siblings who died early. On the marriage of his parents in 1747, he became a companion of the father, who entertained a commercial business in Kiel and also did banking business. Later Schweffel II took over a trade business for spices, iron and hard coal. The trade with iron lost importance for him later.
On February 17, 1792, Schweffel II married Lucia Christina Struve (1756-1805), whose father Paul Hinrich Struve was a commerce aceor. The couple had ten children, seven of whom survived the father. The eldest son Franz Peter (* 27 April 1792) moved to Amsterdam and worked there as a merchant. The younger son Johann Schweffel III. continued the business of his father.
